A project to renovate a soba restaurant, established in 2001, into a hair salon. Based on the premise of making the most of the existing space, the design reinterprets its structure, materials, and built elements, updating the program through a careful reading of what is already there.
The partition that once separated the dining area and kitchen was removed to reconfigure the space as a continuous whole. At the same time, the introduction of new walls was minimized, and the existing perimeter walls—close to the structural frame—were directly repurposed as styling stations. Rather than redefining the spatial outline, the project accepts and rearticulates the existing configuration.
Using the textures and placement of existing materials—wood, white ceramic tiles, and stainless steel—as a guide, the layout of cutting areas and shampoo stations responds to these conditions. Mirrors and shelving are not subordinated to the existing fixtures but are inserted through a reinterpretation of their current state, renewing the relationships between elements.
Newly added walls and the basement office space are unified in white, not to emphasize contrast with the existing, but to dissolve into the overall atmosphere. Instead of erasing traces of the past, the design reads and reconnects them, forming a space that gently transitions into a new use.
